(With BEFORE AND AFTER photos!)

Taking a trip down memory lane while archiving old photos, I came across a picture of myself taken in 2005 and I couldn't believe it that I had to do a double take just to make sure I was really looking at "me".

Whoa! I used to look like this?!

The recent news of Microsoft (MS) wanting to rebrand netbooks as "low-cost small PCs" got me thinking... WHY? Don't you think it's pretty long to keep saying the multi-syllable "low-cost small notebook PC" instead of just a two-syllable "netbook"? I don't know about you but I am so sticking to just "netbook". Here's a funny chart I found on what can be classified as a netbook:

I never intended to buy one... at least for myself, because a netbook is just a lightweight and small version of the traditional laptop aimed at Internet usage and emailing. Hey, I can do that with my phone and my Ipod Touch! But when my mom was constantly complaining at how my old laptop just dies on her when she's trying to type with it, I knew I had to do something, or in this case, buy a netbook. So when Mother's Day came, I told her I was getting her one, on the condition that it'd also double/triple as her birthday gift as well as for their [my parents'] 40th wedding anniversary gift. LOL!

Now, the big question. WHICH NETBOOK TO GET??? There's Lenovo, Asus, Acer, Benq, MSI, HP Mini, you name it... there are too many choices out there and with the same specs and prices!!! Accordingly, each model has its own strengths and weaknesses, but I can't really tell the difference myself. Netbooks though are not designed for heavy programs such as Photoshop or large image processing; they can, however, deal with most Office applications such as Excel and Word very easily.

The first thing I considered was the price. (Of course, who doesn't?) Good thing Thinking Tools, Inc. was having a Midsummer Madness Promo so I headed there to check out what they had... and my choices were trimmed down to the following:

Apparently, the new Asus EEE PC had the Mac-inspired chiclet keys! And it also had the new Atom N280 (1.66 Ghz) processor with 9.5 hours of battery life!!! Plus Wireless N!!! Sweet specs for a pretty sweet price tag! I knew I made the right choice as we've had it for almost a month now and I'm really impressed with the battery life! And it comes with Star Office so you don't have to install MS Office on this baby. Okay, so the netbook is slightly heavier and bigger than the others but you can't go wrong with its performance. My mom actually watched the entire 25 episodes of Boys Over Flowers on this little thing!

And so since it had the Macbook feel with it, I decided to tweak it a wee bit and now it looks like a Macbook wannabe!!! ^_^ Well, not even half the speed of Mac OS X but for a fraction of the price... I couldn't be happier!

Check out the pics below:

See? What did I tell ya? It's actually running on WinXP, by the way.

Now here's a stolen shot I took while my mom had her hair styled while using the computer. Shhh! I hope she doesn't read this blog. ^_^ Hehe! *Peace, Ma!

And here are more shots of her while she was happily playing with her new toy. Oh and do you guys know that last year, I got her a PSP because she was asking for one? HAHAHA! My mom is quite a techy senior citizen! My, my... I wonder who I got my gadget girl impulses from? Hmmm...

Bookworm (as well as other Popcap games) runs pretty smooth on the netbook. I think because I upgraded the RAM to 2 GB. Tee hee.

Alright, Ma!!! Are You Happy??? ^_^

Yup, I think she really is. :) I love you, Ma! ^^,

And thanks for letting me borrow it from time to time especially when I'm out...
Yet I won't even dare compare it, but really, this is the next best thing to a Macbook White. LOL!

More pix at my Flickr account. ^_^ (If you care...)

FYI: It took me like 2 weeks to get everything sorted out. (Goodbye boxes!) I'm so bad at this gyud. So the benefits of having a "clean" room are as follows:

1.    Minimal dust. Good for my rhinitis.
2.    Noticeably cooler air. Don’t know why. Or maybe because I cleaned the a/c, too?
3.    Easier to locate things. Organized ang show!

That's as far as I've observed though, I know there's more.. I just need to get used to living in a spic-and-span environment. Nothing wrong with it. Tee hee. I really should keep this up! I have to. I feel better this way.

So here's me... Wa'y ligo and my feet are dirty I know. HAHA!

I had another topic in mind for my blog tonight but just now I decided to talk about something else. My gums are still throbbing like crazy after having endured a great ordeal with my recent dental work. I've been stressing about it for a week because it's really true that a smile can be priceless... or in my case, paving the perfect way to insolvency.

What did I do now? Nothing really. I just opened my mouth for what seemed like forever while the good doctor drilled, contoured, and God knows what else he did to give me back my self-confidence. Apparently, I'm one of the unfortunate souls who aren't blessed with enviable pearly whites.

A quick history. Nine years ago I got myself a fixed bridge. What is that? Well, it's like dentures but the permanent kind, so you don't have to worry about chewing gum sticking to it or worse, losing it at the beach when you're out swimming. I got 4 false teeth that is. Too much information, huh? Well, for those who can relate, it really is a pain in the neck (or the oral mucosa) having to deal with it.

About a week ago, I was brushing my teeth under pressure after getting alarmed when my mobile phone kept ringing while I was doing my nightly hygiene ritual. (Note to self: Turn the phone off or put it in silent mode when getting ready for bed.) So then, my gums must have bled when I accidentally brushed too hard. My anger management skills and patience were nowhere to be found that I bit my faggot pink toothbrush so freaking hard that it basically broke my tooth! Actually, it was a porcelain tooth so it didn't really hurt... but damn, when I looked at the mirror and smiled, I swear the mirror could have broken to a billion pieces. Okay, so I'm exaggerating. Bottomline: I was really furious at my reflection with one missing tooth! What the #@*%!

Eventually, I was able squeeze an appointment at the dentist the very next day (lucky me, the clinic is just 100 or so meters away from my house) and got it checked. Alas! There's nothing else to do but replace all 4 teeth since it was a fixed bridge. Don't bother asking how much it cost me. But I'll tell you this… it could have bought me a new laptop. There goes my one month salary!

I spent almost an entire afternoon fighting urges to stop squirming at the dentist’s chair as we took off the 9-year-old fixed bridge. When he finally succeeded in getting it all off, I stared at my reflection and it was a million times horrendous compared to that night I broke that one tooth! Thus explains why I sentenced myself on house arrest for a week…

So today, I received an SMS from the secretary at the clinic with good news that my new teeth may be installed today. (Hahaha! Installed! It’s so techy!) Anyways, there I spent an hour or more hoping the pain won’t require me anesthesia but to my dismay, it was really too much to handle. The doctor was even surprised at my actual pain tolerance and the fact that I didn’t bleed much. But after a while, I had to ask for it to block the now considerable amount of pain I was experiencing. And mind you, it wasn’t as sweet as the kind of pain that getting a tattoo brings!

All in all, I’d say he did a very excellent job. The pain was worth it… and now I have a very good reason to smile again.

So here it is… my brand-new smile. Tee hee!

Looks pretty "normal" and ordinary to me. HAHAHA! But that's the point!!!
And what better way to celebrate it than with a pint of ice cream! Hurrayy!!!

Wouldn't you say my dentist did a helluva job well done???

Now, can you guess where's the fixed bridge? ^_^
